Gallbladder surgery - Laparoscopic cholecystectomy

The gallbladder is a small 'sack' (shaped a bit like a water balloon) located adjacent to your liver - in your abdomen, deep to the right lower aspect of your rib cage.  Some people form gallstones in their gallbladder and once they start to cause symptoms then you are at higher chance of developing further complications (such as on-going biliary colic, cholecystitis, jaundice due to bile duct stones or pancreatitis), therefore removal of the gallbladder is generally recommended.  In most patients 'cholecystectomy' (gallbladder removal surgery) is an operation that can be done with 'laparoscopy' (key hole surgery), with one night stay in hospital.
